2013 GCE O-Level Additional Maths 4038 Paper 1 (Post Mortem)

Observations for 2013 GCE O-Level Additional Maths Paper 1:  Graph on linear law, partial fractions, binomial, nature of stationary points, decreasing function, coordinate geometry, exponential word problems, sum & product of roots, proving identity, factor formula, modulus, rate of change, hence qn on dy/dx & integration.

Based on what was tested in GCE O-Level A-Maths 4038 Paper 1, the following concepts are yet to be tested:

  • Trigonometry equations
  • Trigonometry graph
  • Indices
  • Matrices
  • Kinematics
  • Plane Geometry (very likely)
  • Gradient of tangent or normal
  • Logarithms
  • Factor remainder theorem
  • Relationship between curve and line
  • R-formula
  • Equation of circle
  • Area under curve

We look forward to 2013 GCE O-Level A-Maths 4038 Paper 2!
Do your best and check your work to achieve perfection!

2013 GCE O-Level Elementary Maths 4016 Paper 1 (Post Mortem)

It's interesting to see hemisphere and hemisphere. There are a few PSLE level Maths questions as well.

Based on what was tested in GCE O-Level E-Maths 4016 Paper 1, the following concepts are yet to be tested:

  • Scales & maps
  • Men & houses
  • Subject formula
  • Number patterns
  • Graphs (Definitely a question)
  • Quadratic (Definitely a question)
  • Compound Interest & other everyday Maths applications
  • Polygons
  • Construction of bisectors
  • Congruent & Similarity
  • Angle properties of circle (again?)
  • Arc length & area of sector
  • Trigonometry
  • Vectors
  • Probability
  • Mean & Standard deviation

We look forward to 2013 GCE O-Level E-Maths 4016 Paper 2!

A-Maths: Plane Geometry Question (Step-by-Step) [Video]

In this video, I will show you:

  • How to prove that 2 lines are // to each other
  • How to prove a pair of similar triangles
  • How to prove an equation involving length

Properties & Theorems used:

  • Angles in the same segment
  • Intercept Theorem
  • Corresponding angles
  • Tangent - Secant Theorem

Strategies (Used in manipulation in part iii) :

  • Breaking a longer length into smaller parts
  • 'Expansion' of length
  • Using result from earlier parts
  • Factorising common length

A-Maths: Plane Geometry (Geometrical Proof) Mastery Workshop + SPECIAL CODE

Student 1: "I can't see!"

Student 2: "I don't know how to start. I don't know which theorem or formula to use."

Student 3: "I always can't do plane geometry question in exams!"

Student 4: "I don't understand the topic at all!"

These are the common problems faced by many A-Maths students in the topic of Plane Geometry, even A-grade students!

Every year since 2008 in GCE O-Level Additional Maths Paper 2, there's always a Plane Geometry question worth 8 to 10 marks!

This topic can be made easier by

  • Looking out for hints given in the question and diagram
  • Understanding the newly introduced theorems (5 of them)
  • Combining E-Maths angle and symmetry properties of circle
  • Learning the 'dummy-proof' way to prove congruent and similar triangles
  • Exposure to a variety of strategies and questions
  • Learning how to apply the skills learnt on solving questions

I'm conducting my final A-Maths Mastery Workshop on Plane Geometry this September!

Join me for this final revision and solve that Plane Geometry question in O-Level 2013, add 10 marks to your final score!

E-Maths: Reading of Cumulative Frequency Curve (+ Pie Chart)

A parent recently sent me some questions and I would like to share with you this one on Cumulative Frequency.

The tricky part of question (c) is reading the scale correctly.

  • Every small square is 2 units on the x-axis
  • Every small square is 4 units on the y-axis

For (ii), total number of students (160) represent the entire pie chart which is 360 degrees.

Therefore, by proportion, we can find out the degrees of the pie chart for students who are awarded C grade.
